Everyone wants that super aesthetic dorm with all the cutest dorm decor, but most of us don’t know how to actually get it. After all the stuff you move with you, things get cluttered and start to look a little crazy haha

So, to make things easier, here is a step by step list easy dorm decor hacks that can actually give you that look.

#1 – Pick your base color to match to your dorm decor

The first step to really creating the perfect dorm is to make sure you have a rough idea of what your end goal is. Picking a base color like pink or white and then selecting accent colors that complement your main color will make any space look way fancier than it really is.

For example, if you pick a white or a crème as your base, you could add complimentary colors like green and gray or something like pink. Having a vision in mind will allow you to buy things that go together from the beginning and save you a ton of time and money later. Here is an example from Pinterest.

#2 – Create extra dorm storage

The part that usually ruins that super clean look in any space is clutter. Having too much stuff and not enough spots to put it all. Plus, a lot of dorm decor almost adds to the issue, so you have to be selective about decor and if it adds extra storage or not.

With dorms, the biggest struggle is storage.

Luckily, there are so many great ways to get around this issue, you just have to get creative.

My favorite hack is to put risers on the bed and raise it a couple inches and put a boxed storage unit under it. This looks super clean and creates a ton more storage. Things like suitcases that you don’t use as often can hide behind it and be put out of the way.

I also like using this closet hangers to condense everything and allow of more room to hang my clothes

Depending on how much space you have, you can also utilize things like storage ottomans or extra shelving units

#3 – Find actually nice wall dorm decor

Finding wall decor that actually looks nice is challenge in small dorm spaces.

Finding one or two chucky wall pieces that compliment the colors of your space is the best way to go.

Although not as personal, these pieces look better than lots of little printed photos tacked up on a tackboard.

If you want to go the photo route, here are some good ideas that will help keep the look classy.

#4 – Play with the lighting

The best dorms from my freshman year always (and I mean ALWAYS) had two or three different types of lighting.

The overhead just doesn’t cut it.

I love the look of these lights to help tie a space together.

I also love these salt lamps that can bring new colors into your space.

#5 – Develop new habits

This one is arguably the most important.

If you never make your super fancy bed up with all the throw pillows and blankets it will never look aesthetic.

If you never clean up and organize the space will never look aesthetic.

If you never vacuum or wipe anything down the space will never look aesthetic.

You get the gist.

The best thing about this one is you can start to develop these habits before you even move in. Start one at a time, like make your bed and then in a few weeks add a quick nightly organizing and pick up to the routine and so on.

Keeping on top of the little things will help you be way less stressed, way more put together, and help your space look that much better.

Hope this list helps you create the dorm of your dreams! Feel free to save this page so you can return to it when you’re ready to move into your dorm 😉
